Cooking gas cylinder gets costlier by Rs.50 for both subsidised and general users

The price of 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinders will be increased by ₹50 starting April 8, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Monday. For non-Ujjwala consumers, the price will rise from ₹803 to ₹853 per cylinder. Beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) will now pay ₹550, up from ₹500.

Puri clarified that the ₹50 hike applies to both Ujjwala and non-Ujjwala consumers. “The ₹50 increase per cylinder is for both Ujjwala beneficiaries and non-Ujjwala beneficiaries. This will be reviewed every 15 days or one month, whichever is the system,” he said. The LPG price had remained unchanged since August 2024 until this revision.

Alongside the LPG price revision, the central government has increased the excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre. Effective April 9, the excise duty on petrol will stand at ₹13 per litre, and on diesel at ₹10 per litre. Puri stated that this increase will not be passed on to consumers at the retail level.

Puri explained that the excise duty hike is aimed at offsetting losses incurred by oil marketing companies (OMCs). According to him, the companies have faced a cumulative loss of ₹43,000 crore due to subsidised LPG prices. He also pointed out that OMCs carry inventories for around 45 days, with crude oil bought at earlier higher rates. He noted that crude prices had averaged $83 per barrel in January and have recently declined to $75.

The announcement comes shortly after oil marketing companies reduced the price of commercial LPG cylinders. On April 1, the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder was cut by ₹41. In Delhi, the new retail price for a commercial cylinder is ₹1,762. The commercial LPG prices were last revised upward by ₹6 on March 1 across major cities.
